Wellcome to Santiponce
The town of Santiponce was born on the banks of the Guadalquivir, in a place called Isla de Hierro, where the Cartuja Olympic Stadium is located today. Due to its proximity to the river, it suffered frequent floods, and in one of them, which occurred on December 20, 1603, it was buried forever. The surviving residents sought the protection of the monks of the San Isidoro del Campo monastery, who gave them higher land, and the new Santiponce was built, almost entirely, on the ruins of the Roman city of Italica.
Once the town was established in its current location, in 1691 the monks managed to get Charles II to grant a royal privilege to organize the Santiponce Fair, a free fair held every first day of October, with the purpose of activating the economy of the municipality.
Currently, on these same dates, the local Fair and the Popular Craft Show take place, faithful references to this activity of yesteryear.
